Weight Scale

The POS can connect to a CAS weighing scale so you can sell items by weight - fruit, vegetables, meat, sweets, and anything else priced per kilogram or gram. Place the item on the scale, add it to the order, and the POS reads the weight and works out the price automatically. No manual weighing or typing.

There are two ways the POS uses a scale:

Method	How it works	When to use
Live scale (connected)	The scale is plugged into the POS by a serial cable. When you add a weighed item, the POS reads the weight live.	The scale sits next to the till and staff weigh items at the point of sale.
CAS barcode label	The CAS scale prints a barcode label with the price already on it. Staff scan the label at the till.	Items are weighed and labelled in advance (for example, in a back-room packer).

The connected (live) scale works on the Windows desktop POS only, because it needs a physical serial-port connection. The CAS barcode-label method works on any device that can scan a barcode.

Before you start

You need:

• A CAS PDN / ST-series scale (or a compatible CAS model) that supports the RS-232 / USB serial ECR protocol.
• The scale connected to the POS computer by a serial cable (or a USB-to-serial adapter).
• Items set up in the admin portal with a weight unit (kg, g, mg, lb, or oz) and a price per that unit. Only items with a weight unit trigger an automatic weight reading.

TIP

Set the item's unit and price-per-unit in the admin portal on the Items screen. For example, an item priced at $10.00 with a unit of kg sells at $10 per kilogram, and the POS multiplies that by the weight read from the scale.

Step 1 — Set up the scale hardware

Configure the CAS scale itself before connecting it to the POS. These steps put the scale into the mode the POS understands.

1. Turn the scale OFF.
2. Hold the ZERO key, then press the power switch to turn it back on. The display shows U SEt (setup mode).
3. Use ZERO to move between menus and TARE to change a value.
4. Navigate to the r ECr menu (for RS-232) or the U ECr menu (for USB), then set the ECR type to typ 0 or typ 1.
5. Set the serial values to match the POS defaults (see the table in Step 3).
6. Save and exit setup mode on the scale.

WARNING

The POS supports ECR Type 0 and Type 1 only. These types use the standard request/response protocol. If the scale is set to any other ECR type, the POS will not be able to read a weight.

Step 2 — Open the Weight Scale settings

1. Tap Settings in the left navigation menu.
2. Tap Weight Scale.

The screen has two halves: Serial Port Configuration on the left, and Connection Status on the right.

Step 3 — Configure the serial port

1. Under Serial Port, select the port your scale is plugged into. Tap the refresh icon to re-scan if your port is not listed.

2. Set the Serial Options to match your scale. The CAS defaults are:

   Setting	Value

   Stop Bits	1

3. Tap Save & Connect.

When the connection succeeds, the status card on the right turns green and shows Connected. If it fails, the card stays grey and shows the error - see Troubleshooting.

TIP

Not sure which port to pick? Unplug the scale, tap refresh, note the ports listed, then plug the scale back in and refresh again. The port that appears is your scale.

Step 4 — Test the connection

1. On the Connection Status card, tap Test Read Weight.
2. Place an item on the scale.
3. Tap Test Read Weight again.

The card shows the weight read from the scale (for example, 0.538 kg). If it shows No weight on scale, the scale connected correctly but the pan is empty - put something on it and read again.

Auto-Reconnect

Once configured, the scale reconnects automatically every time the POS starts. You only set this up once. If the cable is unplugged and plugged back in, the POS keeps trying to reconnect on its own.

Selling an item by weight

Once the scale is connected, staff sell weighed items exactly like any other item - the POS handles the weighing.

1. Place the item on the scale.
2. Add the weighed item to the cart. You can:
   • Tap the item tile on the menu grid, or
   • Search for the item by name, or
   • Scan the item's barcode.
3. The POS reads the weight from the scale and adds the item to the cart with that weight and the calculated price.

The cart line shows the weight (for example, 0.538 kg) and the price for that weight.

TIP

The scale is only read for items that have a weight unit (kg, g, mg, lb, lbs, or oz). Items sold each (a can of drink, a burger) are added at quantity 1 as normal and the scale is ignored.

The item has options or modifiers - when is the weight read?

If the item has required toppings, variants, or attributes, the POS opens the customise dialog first. Inside that dialog the weight is read automatically, and a scale button appears next to the quantity. Tap it to re-read the weight if you added or removed something from the pan. When you confirm the dialog, the item is added at the weighed quantity.

Nothing is on the scale when I add the item - what happens?

If the pan is empty, the POS adds the item without a weight so you can enter the quantity by hand. Put the item on the scale before adding it, or re-read the weight from the customise dialog.

Using CAS pre-printed barcode labels

If your items are weighed and labelled away from the till, the CAS scale prints an EAN-13 barcode label that contains the item code and the price. Staff just scan it.

1. Scan the CAS label at the item search / barcode field.
2. The POS reads the item code and the price from the barcode, finds the matching item, and adds it to the cart at the correct weight and price.

The barcode follows the CAS format DIIIIIPPPPPPC:

Part	Meaning
D	Department (1 digit)
IIIII	Item code (5 digits) - must match the item barcode
PPPPPP	Price for the weighed item (6 digits)
C	Check digit

The POS works out the weight from the price on the label and the item's price-per-unit set in the admin portal.

WARNING

For a CAS label to be found, the item code printed by the scale must match the barcode set on the item in the admin portal. If scanning a label says "Item is not available", check that the barcode on the item matches the scale's item code.

Troubleshooting

Problem	What to try
Scale won't connect / status stays grey	Check the cable is plugged in and the correct Serial Port is selected. Confirm the Baud Rate, Data Bits, Parity, and Stop Bits match the scale (9600, 7, Even, 1 by default).
Port is not in the list	Tap the refresh icon next to the port selector. On Windows, make sure the USB-to-serial driver is installed.
"Scale is not connected" when adding item	Open Settings → Weight Scale and check the status card. If it is grey, tap Save & Connect to reconnect.
Weight always reads 0 / "No weight"	The scale connected but reads an empty pan. Place the item on the scale before reading. Check the scale is not showing an error or overload on its own display.
Scale did not respond in time	The scale is set to the wrong ECR type. Re-do Step 1 and set the ECR type to typ 0 or typ 1.
Item added at quantity 1, not by weight	The item does not have a weight unit. Set its unit to kg, g, lb, or oz in the admin portal.
CAS label scan says "Item is not available"	The item code on the label does not match any item's barcode. Match the barcode in the admin portal to the scale's item code.
